                    Adopt A Family Christmas Program

Doing without things that most of us take for granted is a way of life for some families in our community.  Some children cannot go to social events, expect certain toys for Christmas or their birthday, or even have a Christmas tree because their families cannot afford these expenses.  Fortunately, the families of Terrebonne Parish have Catholic Charities' Adopt A Family Christmas Program to help make the dreams of their children come true…

Toy Drive a Success!

Thanks to all who made the Toy Drive a Success!

Annually, Parishioners from participating Catholic Churches in Terrebonne, as well as local Businesses and Organizations, purchase gifts for the Jessie Tree to make a child's Christmas brighter.  Gifts are returned to the church during mass where the gifts are blessed and put into family bags for the families to pick up or are delivered straight to the homes of the families in need. This year, 253 children were blessed with gifts from this ministry!

Miracles of all types occur during the Christmas Season for which we are THANKFULL:

The Marine Toys for Tots provided us with much needed toys for various age groups that were used to help supplement the gifts the parishioners purchased for each child.

Students, faculty and staff of Fletcher Technical Community College had a mitten, hat and sock drive.  The "Mitten Tree" was decorated with all the donations which were given to needy families participating in the Toy Drive.

Philip Toups held a Gumbo House Christmas Party for close friends and family where everyone brought in gifts of clothing for 60 of the children registered in our Christmas Program.

Special THANKS also extend to the men at the Assisi Bridge House and our faithful volunteers from St. Bernadette Knights of Columbus who devoted hours of their time to make the toy drive a yearly success.

Single parents who have applied for child support through the legal system and families that are eligible for food stamps that have children 14 years of age or under who are in need of help can come to our registration site which is located at St. Bernadette KC Hall on 5522 West Main St., in Houma during the second full week of October every year.  In order to fill out an application, applicants must provide the following items:

Food Stamp Printout Sheets, Child Support Printout Sheets (if single parent), check stubs, birth certificates of all children, wish lists of all children, and proof of all monthly household expenses (rent receipts, utility bills, phone bills, cable or other television bills, rent to own bills,
finance notes, doctor bills, insurance bills, childcare bills, etc.)

Philosophy

Christmastime helps to provide an avenue for people to reach into the hearts of the human souls of
those that are suffering.  By purchasing gifts for needy children, families are not just giving a gift…
what they are doing is so much more:

 Children experience increased self esteem as they discover that they can now join their
neighborhood friends with skating on the sidewalks or riding their bikes down the block.
 Parents see what has been given to them and are relieved that they did not have to go
into uncontrollable debt as a result of the Christmas pressure.
 The depression felt among the children and their parents is temporarily lifted and a fresh
sense of what the future might hold in store for them becomes alive and real.
 Parents and children are given new strength to better their conditions as the care and
warmth of the community enters into their hearts.

This program is more than just giving and receiving.  It is mainly about sharing one’s love and
strength with someone else who feels tired and run down.  By participating in this type of program,
the strength of our ever loving Christ child becomes present and joy fills the air.

If you know of a family that is in need of our help this Christmas Season, please let them know
that registration is held every October through November for families in various parts of the Diocese.
To register, the family must go to the toy drive headquarters
in the area in which they live.
